Yellow catfish is currently widely cultured and is sought after by farmers because of its stable price, strong adaptability to the environment, strong disease resistance, and easy breeding. In order to pursue the economic value of breeding, controlling the survival rate is a major matter. According to past experience, the disease rate of yellow catfish is higher in spring. Therefore, preventing diseases in spring is a process that cannot be ignored.
Part 01
What diseases is yellow catfish susceptible to?
The yellow catfish is a unique species and has high environmental requirements. Especially after the temperature gradually rises in spring, environmental changes make yellow catfish more susceptible to disease than in other periods.
In spring, yellow catfish is susceptible to pathogenic organisms such as Edwardsiella edwardsii, Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas temperarum, and Trichophyton. After being infected with pathogenic bacteria, yellow catfish will develop ascites disease, enteritis, split head disease, ulcer disease, etc. For example, Edwardsiella infection can cause symptoms such as abnormal behavior, skin ulceration and bleeding, split heads and gray liver in yellow catfish. It is contagious and requires urgent prevention and treatment. Of course, there are also environmental reasons for the disease of yellow catfish. For example, the water environment is not good, and bacteria and pathogenic organisms breed in large quantities, making the fish susceptible to disease.
Part 02
Why is spring the season of high disease incidence for yellow catfish
?
After winter, the body weight of yellow catfish decreases, the body’s immunity decreases, and its ability to resist stress and disease decreases.
In addition, if there is no water transfer in winter, harmful substances in the sediment and water will increase, which will worsen the living environment of yellow catfish and lead to the emergence of diseased fish.
When the temperature rises in spring, yellow catfish resumes eating. This is also the growth period of microorganisms in the water. If no intervention is carried out, harmful algae and pathogens in the water may take over.
Part 03
How to prevent and control diseases in spring?
1. Water level management
In spring, the temperature begins to rise. The specific heat capacity of water is large and the temperature rises slowly. Appropriately lowering the water level will help increase the water temperature and promote feeding and growth. Raising the water level before the late spring cold cools down can promote the stability of the water body.
2. Water quality management
In order to reduce the invasion of pathogenic bacteria in the water, we should carry out disinfection. When using 10% povidone-iodine, it is recommended to use 0.45 to 0.75ml per 1m³ of water. Use it once every 7 days. After diluting 400 times, pour it into the entire pool. Do not use irritating disinfectants.
0.45~0.75ml/m3
Yellow catfish likes relatively fat water bodies, so in 7 days after the disinfection is completed, fertilizer and water should be replenished. Amino acids, polysaccharides, trace elements and other substances should be used to replenish nutrients in the water, and then be combined with beneficial bacteria to enrich the content of animals and plants in the water and promote material circulation in the pond.
30~40 mu*m/bag
0.5~1kg/mu*m
3. Timely detection
Daily inspection Detect dissolved oxygen, pH value, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate and other indicators in the water, handle abnormal water conditions in a timely manner, and turn on the aerator frequently, usually about 30 minutes before feeding. Try not to fish as much as possible, because fishing will cause mechanical damage to the skin of yellow catfish, making it susceptible to bacterial infection and increasing the risk of disease.
4. Feeding management
Feed early, open mouth early, supplement nutrition and improve physical fitness. Yellow catfish that have just resumed eating eat too much, which can easily cause liver and intestinal problems, leading to an outbreak of fish diseases in spring. For one meal a day, the feeding rate is controlled at 0.1 to 0.5%. In order to improve the resistance of yellow catfish, vitamins, trace elements and other mixed bait can be fed to improve immunity.
