January 17th every year is the "Black Bear Protection Day" established by the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation ("CBCGDF") black bear sanctuary. January 17, 2024 is the seventh "Black Bear Protection Day" Day” is an important moment for us to pay attention to black bears.
A few days ago, Qinnan District, Qinzhou, Guangxi An incident in Napeng Town where a black bear was electrocuted after climbing a high-voltage electricity tower became a hot topic, making people get to know the Asian black bear in this sad way. The reason why this black bear climbed up the high-voltage electricity grid is unknown. But this also shows that the protection of black bears has a long way to go.
Asian black bears, also known as moon bears, dog bears, and black blind bears, are my country’s flagship species. They have eye-catching white crescent-shaped markings on their chests and are distributed in forests in northeastern and southwest my country. They are the top members of the food chain and are crucial to maintaining ecological balance and maintaining the diversity of the ecosystem. Therefore, their presence in the wild is also a sign of ecosystem health. At present, the wild population of black bears in my country is estimated to be 12,000 to 18,000, with the highest estimate being only 20,000. They are already very endangered and are a second-level protected animal in my country.
Although our country has taken very positive measures , however, Asia black bears still face many survival crises. First, habitat destruction and fragmentation pose a huge threat to the survival of wild Asian black bear populations. Human activities continue to compress the living space of black bears, and the natural habitat of black bears continues to decrease, forcing them to come into contact with human society, increasing the risk of human-animal conflicts. Secondly, profit-driven factors such as poaching and illegal trade in wildlife products (such as bear skins) have led to a sharp decline in the number of black bears. Finally, some practices of harvesting bear bile for traditional medicine have also had a negative impact on black bears, increasing the uncertainty of their survival.
Therefore, in order to further protect the Asiatic black bear, protect its habitat, promote the recovery of the wild population of the Asiatic black bear, and encourage more public participation, support and solidarity in the ranks of biodiversity protection, the CBCGDF Black Bear Protection The group and volunteers agreed to designate January 17th every year as "Black Bear Protection Day." This initiative aims to arouse people's attention to the protection of black bears, raise people's awareness, and encourage more people to take active actions and contribute to the protection of black bears.
The China Green Development Council’s Black Bear Protection Team has always been on the front line of black bear protection and has continued to work hard on black bear protection. It has built a protected area system with Xiaoxinganling as the core area, and has successively established the China Green Development Council. China Green Development Council Black Bear Sanctuary Riyuexia, China Green Development Council Black Bear Sanctuary Weidong, China Green Development Council Black Bear Sanctuary Fenglin, China Green Development Council Black Bear Sanctuary Yichun, China Green Development Council Black Bear Rescue Base Six protected areas including Harbin, China Green Development Council Black Bear Protection and Wuchang Phoenix Mountain have basically completed the construction of the black bear protected area patrol network. Through daily patrols and popular science propaganda, volunteers have further increased public awareness and support for black bear protection, and created a good atmosphere in society to jointly protect black bears.
At the same time, the China Green Development Council’s Black Bear Protection Group actively conducts scientific research on black bears, providing important scientific basis for better understanding and protection of black bears. Over the years, they have conducted ecological research on black bears and investigated the use of black bear bile as medicine and its alternatives. These scientific research results can not only provide scientific basis for the protection of black bears and their habitats, but also provide reference for the protection research of other species. and reference.
Protecting black bears and protecting the ecological environment is a A long-term and arduous task requires more people to participate. Frontline researchers and volunteers have used their actions and sweat to build the "Great Steel Wall" for black bear protection. However, we should also see that poaching still exists, and there are also problems such as local residents' lack of understanding and support for black bear protection. These factors all affect the effectiveness of black bear protection. But we should also see that more and more people are practicing the concept of harmonious coexistence between man and nature with a positive attitude. This also makes us more convinced that although the road ahead is winding, the cause of black bear protection is brilliant. .
Let’s celebrate Black Bear Conservation Day! Because it is our common wish to pay attention to and protect black bears!
