The Current Situation of Fish Food

When buying fish food, it is not helpful to look at the ingredient list. Most of the fish food on the market is made from fish and shrimp meat that has been processed through craftsmanship. .

In many far-sea fishing operations, the meat of the seafood caught is not suitable for human consumption and will be sold to feed factories. This is the kind of fish food that most of us aquarists buy without being picky.

In order to facilitate storage and sale, fish food is usually crushed into suitable sizes, dehydrated, and some are dyed.

Grading Strategy

So, when you get a fish food, it is normal for it to have a fishy smell. Pinch the fish food with your hands or fingernails to test the softness and hardness to see if the dehydration is too severe and the fish food is too hard. The surface of fish food is brightly colored, and the color is not the basic color of fish or shrimp. You should consider whether to add dyes.

I call this kind of fish food "dry food", it has a unique function!

When we go out for a short period of time and cannot feed every day, feed the fish a meal of this dry food before leaving home, and they will last for a long, long time!

Fish food grading standards

With the improvement of living standards, eating dry food is no longer a problem.

After keeping fish for a long time, aquarists have focused on the diversity of fish food.

Based on the composition of fish food, fish food can be roughly divided into two categories: animal feed and plant feed.

Animal feed: live food, dry feed.

Plant-based feed: aquatic plants, algae.

Animal feed is similar to how we eat meat, which grows into long, long shapes. Plant-based feed is similar to the green vegetables we eat, with good hair color and good digestion.

Animal feed needs to consider two issues: easy digestion and appropriate amount.

Eating meat is easy to accumulate food. Although guppies do not have glass stomachs, they cannot eat enough and cannot digest food. This puts a heavy burden on the gastrointestinal tract. Not only is it easy to get enteritis and ascites, but it is also easy to reduce physical fitness.

If you have time and energy, you can feed live food. The nutrition of live food is similar to that of dry food, but it is very easy to absorb. The advantage is most obvious in the fry stage.

There are many choices for plant-based feeds~ Some aquarists feed cooked spinach, spirulina, green water, green moss, grass tanks, etc., which can supplement guppies to plant-based feeds. feed.

The daily demand for plant-based feed is not large, and it is not recommended for aquarists to only feed plant-based feed and not eat meat. Aquarists can provide it according to their own ideas.

In addition to the above two main categories, there are also trace elements. Some aquarists mix allicin in fish food to supplement trace elements.

I personally think that ordinary aquarists don’t need to worry about trace elements, as long as the species they feed are too single.

The raw materials of the carnivorous feed we feed are fish and shrimp. They themselves contain trace elements needed by fish, which can be supplemented by daily feeding. Aquarists who have the energy to do research would be better off paying attention to the addition of trace elements.

Stage matching of feed

Having said so much, many aquarists still don’t know how to feed. Next, let’s talk about how our fish food should be based on the development stage of the fish. How to match~

The birth to adulthood of guppies:

①Birth-2 months: This is the childhood period of the young fry, which has not yet reached sexual maturity. At this time, the daily They don’t eat much, so you can give them something good to eat.

Those who have the energy can hatch live brine shrimp eggs every day and feed them. Those who have no energy can also choose brine shrimp egg products and pay attention to the quality of the products.

② 2 months to 4 months: This is the juvenile period of the fry. They are sexually mature and can conceive and give birth. The body is still in the stage of continuous development.

If you want to feed guppies only shrimp eggs at this time, you must consider increasing the amount or adding carnivorous feed. This is also the transition period from shrimp eggs to dry feed only.

At the same time, it is also the color development period of guppies, so plant-based feed can be added appropriately.

Guppy fish food

③More than 4 months: This is the adult period of guppies. Most of them are fully developed.

The adult fish can get rid of the shrimp eggs (which are too small and difficult to eat) and only eat dry feed. Their color is also fully developed (stopped) and their need for plant-based feed is reduced.

In summary, we prepare guppy feed, which can be divided into three categories: childhood (nutrition is easy to absorb, the amount can be small), adolescence (increase the amount, mix plant-based feed, and transition to dry feed), Adulthood (dry feed).
