What is a hypoallergenic cat ?

Most people who are allergic to cats are not allergic to the cat's fur, but to proteins in the cat's saliva, urine and dander (skin fragments). Frequent cleaning of areas of the home where cats spend time can help reduce exposure to some allergens.

While no cat is truly allergen-free, breeds are called hypoallergenic because they naturally produce fewer allergens than other cats.

Anecdotally, some breeds may be less likely to trigger allergies. This is partly due to their lower-than-average shedding, but most importantly, it's due to the allergenic proteins naturally produced in their bodies. As a common allergen, Fel D1 protein is secreted less in these hypoallergenic breeds.

Balinese Cat

The Balinese cat is almost identical to the Siamese cat breed in most respects, except for its long hair and richly feathered tail. Despite their long coat, this affectionate and active breed is known for shedding little, requiring only weekly grooming. These cats may also have less of the allergy-causing Feld 1 protein than many other cats.

Cornis Rex Cat

The short, wavy fur of Cornis Rex cats does not shed as much dander as easily as long-haired cats or cats with thick fur. They have only a fine undercoat and no coat at all. These cats are usually very intelligent and active, and they love to be the center of attention.

German Rex

Like the Cornish Rex, some people recommend the German Rex as one of the best cat breeds for people with allergies. Its wavy fur resists shedding, minimizing the spread of dander and other allergens around the home. These cats are outgoing and playful, and they prefer to participate in things their humans do.

Javanese Cat

The Javanese cat is the result of a cross between a Balinese cat and a point-colored shorthair cat, creating a long-haired cat similar to the Siamese cat and a wider range of coat colors. These cats have no undercoat, which means they don’t shed much and only need grooming once a week. Therefore, they spread less allergens, which may be effective for people with mild cat allergies.

Oriental Shorthair

The Oriental Shorthair is a cross between several cat breeds, including the American Shorthair, Abyssinian, and Siamese. These lively, playful and intelligent cats are moderate shedders and only require brushing a few times per week. Wiping them with a damp cloth can also help remove dead hair and dander, thus minimizing allergens.

Russian Blue Cat

Russian Blue cats are a gentle cat breed that is said to be suitable for people with mild cat allergies. Its shiny coat sheds less and typically only requires grooming once a week. In fact, these quiet and gentle cats often enjoy sitting with their favorite humans for grooming sessions.
