Do this before every time you give your dog a bath: Watch your head and don’t get too close to the anal glands. To clean, first hold the root of the dog's tail with your left hand to expose the anal opening; hold toilet paper in your right hand and place it directly against the anal opening. Press the anal glands at four o'clock and eight o'clock with the thumb and index finger of your right hand, squeeze inward and then outward. If you rub and pull it externally, anal gland fluid will be discharged. After repeated squeezing several times, the anal gland fluid can be emptied.
Be careful not to use excessive force when squeezing to prevent damage to the anal glands and inflammation.
It is important to note that long-term soft stools in dogs can easily cause anal gland fluid accumulation and obstruction, so the cleaning cycle of the anal glands should be relatively short.
In fact, regular squeezing and cleaning of the dog’s anal glands is very important, not just to get rid of the dog’s body odor. If the dog’s anal glands are not squeezed regularly, it can also cause anal gland inflammation.
Normal secretions are light yellow-brown, with concentrations ranging from watery to paste, and are accompanied by a foul odor. . If there is pus and blood in the secretion, it means you are infected and you should see a doctor as soon as possible. If you can feel the accumulation but cannot squeeze it out, it means that the anal glands are blocked and must be treated as soon as possible and seek medical attention. Otherwise it will swell.
In this case, the dog will lick its anus and rub it on the ground. If it is severe, it will hurt. Due to the pain, the dog will sprint or chase the tail or keep licking or biting the base of the tail, and eventually an abscess will develop. The dog at this time appears listless, refuses to eat or is constipated.
Regularly check the fluid sacs in the anus. How often to clean them depends on the frequency of knot accumulation in each dog. Some once a month, while some don't have any accumulation for two or three months, and some don't need to be cleaned at all. Smaller breeds of dogs are more likely to get clogged than larger dogs, possibly because they eat softer and more food than larger dogs, creating a harder substance.
