Spring is coming and the turtles are waking up from hibernation. For those considering getting a turtle, the importance of learning to properly evaluate them cannot be ignored.
1. Observation: Carefully observe the turtle's environment, including Arrangement of tools, facilities, temperature and water quality. This will give you a general idea of the breeder's breeding standards.
Observe whether the turtle can float gracefully on the water, climb lightly onto land or flip back, and check for signs of disinfection or medication. Also pay attention to whether the texture of their feces is consistent. If the turtle is in captivity, you can even try luring it with food to assess its overall health. 2. Listen: Pay attention to the sounds the turtle makes. A healthy turtle has a good respiratory system and will make a crisp hissing sound and quickly withdraw its head when frightened. When examining your turtle, hold it gently with one hand and feel for any faint tremors. Then tap its head gently to see if the sound it makes is normal. 3. Ask: While the information you may gain is limited, it’s still worth asking some questions. Anyone can make up a reason, but it's good to get some basic knowledge.
4. Inspection: Focus on checking whether there are any secretions from the nostrils, eyes or anus. Look for healthy color in your mouth. For high-quality turtles, evaluate the flexibility and balance of the limbs during crawling.
Gently lift the turtle's back shell and gently lift it. Shake from side to side. This action will naturally reveal its head, neck and limbs. Once you are familiar with the turtle, place it on a flat surface and observe its graceful crawling posture.
Of course, in many cases we may not have the opportunity to personally select the turtle. However, these guidelines can be used as a reference for a physical examination after receiving your turtle.
