On March 8, 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a proposed new regulation for animal Drug sponsors provide predictable prescription and over-the-counter new animal drugs, as well as labeling requirements for new animal drugs used in animal feed.

The FDA stated that the proposed label content and format will benefit veterinarians, animal owners, and animal producers by providing more consistent information for the safe and effective use of these new animal drugs.

As for the reasons for proposing this regulation, FDA pointed out in the unpublished proposed rule submitted:

The lack of guidance on the format and content of each component of the label leaves sponsors Confusion can arise when preparing labels for FDA review, sometimes resulting in poor quality label submissions. "Low-quality label submissions increase the time it takes for them to revise and resubmit adequate labels, which also increases the time it takes for FDA to review and approve labels, lengthening the overall application time."
