Chai Jing's "Under the Dome" aroused public attention and discussion on smog. Smog is very harmful to the human body, and it is even more harmful to dogs!

Recently, there has been a surge in the number of people coming to the hospital to treat their dogs, and most of them are upper respiratory tract infections. This is mainly due to the dogs' insufficient resistance to hazy days.

I love my pets丨The impact and protection of smog on dogs

Dogs do not have nose hair like humans. They have no resistance to fine particles and rely only on the cilia on the trachea to filter impurities in the air when breathing. In addition, their nasal mucosa and nasal defense function are relatively fragile and much worse than humans. Moreover, 1.2M from the ground is within the range of harmful gas accumulation. Dogs are exactly within this height range. Excessive PM2.5 allows dogs to inhale a large amount of pollutant particles directly from their nostrils, which has a great impact on the dog's health. .

After dogs inhale polluted air, it is easy to induce respiratory diseases and produce symptoms such as coughing. Pet dogs such as Pekingese and Pomeranian are prone to heart problems, and elderly dogs are more likely to get sick in such hazy days.

Preventive measures for dog respiratory and lung diseases:

1. Rhinitis

Rhinitis is when the nasal mucosa is affected by cold, smoke, dust, mold, and pollen Inflammation caused by stimulation by factors such as ammonia, chlorine, pesticides, chemical fertilizers, etc. mostly occurs in spring and autumn.

Symptoms: Because the nasal mucosa is irritated and itchy, you often sneeze, shake your head, wipe your nose, runny nose (serous at first, then mucus, or even mucopurulent), flushed nasal mucosa, nostrils There are dry scabs all around, nasal congestion, and difficulty breathing. Laryngitis and tracheitis can occur when inflammation spreads. In chronic rhinitis, due to the hypertrophy of the nasal mucosa, breathing is labored and snoring occurs.

Treatment: You can use 0.5 parts of iodine, 2.5 parts of potassium iodide plus 100 parts of glycerin and distilled water for steam inhalation, or flush the nasal cavity with 2%-3% boric acid solution, 0.1% potassium permanganate solution, etc. every day 1 -2 times. Use antibiotics when there are systemic symptoms and fever. When there is nasal congestion, use 0.1 g of cocaine, 1 ml of 1:1000 epinephrine solution and 20 ml of distilled water for intranasal instillation, 2-3 times a day.

2. Laryngitis

Cause: same as rhinitis.

Symptoms: Mainly cough. It started as a short dry cough and then became a wet cough. Cold air, eating, and exercise often induce coughing; the throat is sensitive and coughs when touched.

Treatment: Remove the causative factor. To relieve cough, you can use 0.3 parts of codeine phosphate, 10 parts of marshmallow syrup + 100 parts of distilled water, one teaspoon at a time, several times a day; or 0.5 parts of ethylmorphine hydrochloride plus 20 parts of distilled water, 10-20 drops at a time, 2-3 times a day . Ammonium chloride (1-2 spoons of 0.2% solution) and potassium iodide can be used to remove phlegm. Use antibiotics if there is a systemic reaction.

3. Trachea-bronchitis

Tracheitis is mostly an extension of laryngitis. See laryngitis for its cause and treatment. The cause of bronchitis is similar to laryngitis and is also seen in canine distemper; almost all canine pneumonia is accompanied by bronchitis.

Symptoms: Dry cough at first, then wet cough with wheezing. Mucus discharge from the nose, fever, increased pulse rate, and difficulty breathing may occur. There are rale sounds in the lungs on auscultation. X-ray examination shows heavy lung markings (bronchial shadows).

Treatment: Strengthen care and apply antibiotics.

4. Bronchopneumonia

Bronchopneumonia (referring to bronchitis complicated by pneumonia) is also called lobular pneumonia (referring to the occurrence scope being limited to 1-several lobules), which mostly occurs in puppies and Elderly dogs have a higher incidence rate from late autumn to early spring.

Cause: The occurrence of bronchopneumonia is mainly due to various reasons (such as transportation, overwork, improper feeding and management, colds, turbid air in stables, childhood and aging, vitamin deficiency and even lungworm parasites and roundworms) When the body's resistance is reduced due to migration, etc., the opportunistic pathogenic bacteria that usually parasitize in the respiratory tract (such as Pasteurella, pneumococcus, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, etc.) will continue to cause harm and the disease will occur, which may further Causes a spreading epidemic among surrounding dogs. In addition, lobular pneumonia is also seen in canine distemper.

Symptoms: Cough, mucus or purulent nasal discharge, bronchial rales, fever, which later drops to about 39.3°C, breathing speeds up, and then dyspnea occurs. Lesions are generally distributed in the anterior and lower parts. Due to the varying sizes of lesions, auscultation results vary. If the inflammation is scattered in a few pulmonary lobules, there will be no abnormality on auscultation and percussion; if the scope of the disease is large (when many pulmonary lobules are infected at the same time or one after another - confluent lobular pneumonia), the alveolar sounds on auscultation will be weak, with crepitus and crepitus. Tracheal rales, and auscultation reveals a dull area. Hematological examination: the total number of neutrophils increased and the nucleus shifted to the left. X-ray examination shows the shadow of pneumonia foci.

Treatment: Use antibiotics or sulfa drugs to eliminate inflammation. Apply cold wet cloth to chest 1-2 times a day. For expectoration, a mixture of 0.015 ml apomorphine hydrochloride, 2.0 ml dilute hydrochloric acid, 10.0 ml glycerin, and 150 ml distilled water can be used, 1 teaspoon every 3-4 hours. Or use 3 grams of potassium iodide, 6 grams of sodium bicarbonate and 150 ml of distilled water, three times a day, one teaspoon at a time. Use sodium sodium and camphor to strengthen the heart, as well as other symptomatic treatments. In addition, care should be strengthened.

5. Pulmonary edema

Pulmonary edema refers to the filling of large amounts of fluid between the alveoli and lobules of the lungs. It is seen in dogs with heart failure, left heart valve stenosis or insufficiency, systemic congestion, inhalation of stuffy air or irritating smoke, allergic reactions, and dogs lying down for a long time due to joints or other diseases.

Symptoms: difficulty breathing (opening mouth, stretching neck), cyanosis of mucous membranes, bronchial rales in the lower part of the lungs on auscultation, light red foamy liquid in the nose, and death from suffocation in severe cases.

Treatment: Inject atropine to reduce body fluid leakage and inhale oxygen. Injectable antibiotics are administered to control secondary bacterial infections.

The haze is so serious that people feel uncomfortable when going out. Dogs are more sensitive to pollution than humans and cannot stand hazy days. Due to the lack of relevant protective equipment suitable for dogs, it is recommended to reduce the time spent walking dogs outside in hazy weather, try to arrange activities at night, and not take dogs out during severe haze periods to reduce the possibility of respiratory and lung diseases in dogs. If conditions are good, professional equipment can be used to purify the air in the home environment, improve the living environment, and reduce the harm of haze to family members and pets.

The U.S. Air Purifier's anti-epidemic grade air purifier uses the purification factors generated by PHI technology to improve the self-purification ability of indoor air and kill more than 90% of bacteria, viruses and mold in the air in a short time. It can also eliminate inhalable particles in the air and improve indoor air quality comprehensively, efficiently and safely without using any chemical agents.
