Comminuted fractures caused by car accidents and falling from buildings require surgical treatment, and direct amputation may be possible if necessary.
1. Self-judgment of dog fractures. The unique symptoms of dog fractures are: deformation, displacement of both ends of the fracture (such as Angular displacement, longitudinal axis displacement, lateral displacement, rotational displacement, etc.), the affected limb shows abnormal postures such as shortening, bending, and elongation. The second is the abnormal activities of the dog, such as flexion, rotation and other abnormal activities when the affected limb is loaded or passively moved (but the abnormal activities are not obvious with fractures of ribs and vertebrae). Bone friction sounds can be heard at the broken ends of the bones. In addition, symptoms such as bleeding, swelling, pain and dysfunction can also be seen. Open fractures are often accompanied by major soft tissue trauma, bleeding and bone fragments. At this time, the sick dog has obvious systemic symptoms, including refusal to eat, pain and uneasiness, and sometimes elevated body temperature. The diagnosis can be made based on the history of trauma and local symptoms. If necessary, X-ray examination or photography of the pet can be carried out. 2. Can a dog heal itself after a fracture? Dogs may not heal themselves if they have a fracture. Usually, when a dog has a fracture, the best treatment is surgery. Postoperative intravenous infusion of anti-inflammatory and analgesic products, restriction of exercise, and oral administration of drugs to promote bone healing; if you do not want surgery, it is recommended to take oral or injected anti-inflammatory and analgesic treatments. Drugs are required to be kept in cages, but there may be poor prognosis, such as lameness, bone hyperplasia pain, etc. If the dog is hit by a car, has a fractured tibia, fibula, or pelvic fracture, and if no treatment is taken and left alone, the dog may become unable to stand on its hind limbs and become paralyzed. If your dog is pressed in the stomach by a car, you should take it to the hospital for examination immediately and take an X-ray or B-ultrasound to see if the dog's spine is damaged, if there is bleeding of internal organs, or if the internal organs are damaged, and then check if there is any damage to the bladder. If there is internal bleeding, it can be extracted and treated with a hemostatic injection. 3. Emergency treatment after fracture (1) Emergency rescue: It should be carried out at the location of the disease to prevent the fracture end from being displaced or serious complications occurring when the dog is moved. Emergency first aid includes: First, stop bleeding. Use bandages, cloth strips, ropes, etc. to tie the wound to stop bleeding. Apply iodine to the affected area and remove iodoform-sulfonamide powder from the wound. The second is to temporarily bandage and fix the fracture and then send it to a veterinary clinic for treatment immediately. (2) Plastic surgery: Recumbent position and plastic surgery under local anesthesia. When the fractured part of a limb is displaced, the assistant can pull it distally along the axis of the limb to straighten the displaced fractured part so that the two broken ends can be restored correctly. At this time, attention should be paid to whether the limb axis is normal and whether the two limbs are the same length. (3) Fixation: Perform general cleaning of the affected area of non-open fractures. For open fractures, after general treatment, iodoform-sulfonamide powder is removed from the wound, and then fixed with a plaster bandage or a small splint. When fixing, it should be filled with cotton or cotton pads to prevent friction. Minimize movement after fixation. Appropriate movement can be allowed after 3-4 weeks. Generally, bandages and splints can be removed after 40-60 days.(4) Systemic therapy: bone-setting medicine can be taken orally, and animal growth hormone, calcium tablets, cod liver oil, etc. can be fed. For sick dogs with open fractures, antibiotics and tetanus antitoxin can be used to prevent infection
4. Post-surgery Precautions (1) Regardless of external or internal fixation, the dog's movement must be restricted within 2 weeks after surgery, and the dog can move freely after 2 weeks. (2) Systemic application of antibiotics to prevent and control infection. (3) 24 to 48 hours after external fixation, check whether there is edema under the fixation. If there is swelling, it means that the bandage is too tight and should be re-bandaged. (4) Strengthen feeding management and nutrition, and supplement vitamin A, vitamin D and calcium preparations. (5) The bandage is generally removed after 45 to 60 days for external fixation and 180 days for internal fixation. The bone marrow needle or bone plate can be removed surgically after X-ray examination.
