What led you to join Purina? How does the veterinary profession fit into your job?
Before joining Nestlé Purina, I worked in the animal welfare industry for nearly 10 years. I witnessed too many unfortunate experiences of pets, such as abandonment, conflicts between humans and dogs, etc. At that time, I was dreaming about The picture of humans and pets living in harmony, but also knowing that many problems can actually be avoided through scientific breeding.
After joining Purina, I found that the pet food industry is still an area that promotes scientific feeding. Taking Purina as an example, our mission is to help pets live a better life. In layman’s terms, it’s important not only to keep your pet well fed, but also to eat well. This is also an important principle of the five freedoms of animal welfare, that is, allowing animals to enjoy freedom from hunger, thirst and disease.
During the five years of working at Nestlé Purina, I gradually discovered that Purina is actually a university, which combines animal medicine, animal nutrition, animal behavior, feed processing technology, and scientific formulation. Integrate other professional knowledge into employees’ daily work to help every employee improve their professional quality. For me personally, every time I help pet owners solve feeding problems, share the functional principles of high-tech products with customers, and see more pets’ health improved, it is actually a very fulfilling thing. I believe that many physician friends will feel the same way on this point.
The quality of Q food has always been a concern for pet owners and pet doctors. What makes Nestlé Purina a leader in the global pet food industry? What kind of opportunity led Nestlé Purina to start developing prescription foods?
Behind the "late but" of prescription food is the accumulation of Purina people.
Different from new entrants in the industry who enter with development, Purina is an early investor in the pet industry and a pioneer in the foundation of the pet food industry; Purina has never lacked the courage to pioneer and innovate, and has never lacked the courage to pioneer and innovate. Not forgetting the original intention of animal welfare, every prescription food will undergo strict quality testing before being put on the market. Even if only one nutrient fails to meet the standard, it will be ordered to be re-produced. Because Purina people firmly believe that improving diseases cannot be reduced to false and empty slogans.
Abroad, Purina has more than 30 years of experience in the production and sales of prescription grains; however, localized production is not a simple copy and paste, but a matter of adjusting materials according to supply conditions and according to differentiated clinical needs. The hard work of revising the process is the result of more than 200 indicators and countless tests. Purina's trademark and prescription food certification are medals of merit embodying Nestlé's century-old scientific spirit. They are also a strong guarantee that consumers can trust and that medical institutions can feel at ease.
“We have done it to make China the fourth country that can produce prescription food; to complete the highest level of technology and conduct independent scientific research on pet nutrition, we have done it; to make ‘pets healthier after eating them’ It has become a reality and every slogan has scientific evidence. We have done this, which makes every Purina person proud.”
Q is the flagship of Nestlé Purina®. What achievements and important milestones has the brand Guanneng Prescription Food® achieved globally?
Nestlé Purina’s Crown Energy prescription food has created many world firsts:
In 1987, we launched a world-first research project on the relationship between dog weight and Lifespan research. On this basis, the first dog prescription food using soy isoflavones for weight control in dogs was developed.
In 1998, we launched the first truly hydrolyzed canine prescription Food helps dogs with food allergies relieve their pain.
In 1999, in order to promote the dissemination and development of canine genetic family trees, we established the world's first canine DNA distribution center to facilitate data exchange among global scientists and study the pathogenic mechanism at the genetic level. For example, the family genetic problem of cancer in dogs and cats. At the same time, the center also supports gene sequencing and completed the sequencing task of the world's first complete dog genome sequence.
The first complete genome sequence was a boxer dog, and the first complete genome sequence was an Abyssinian cat.
In 2004, based on genetic research, we launched the first diet to apply molecular nutrition to treat canine arthritis. This is also the canine joint prescription diet that was just launched this year.
In 2019, the world’s first prescription food that can effectively improve canine epilepsy was released, which is also known as the coronary nerve care prescription food.
In 2020, we launched the world's first product that can help alleviate people's allergies to cats. From then on, many people who love cats but are allergic to cats no longer need to smoke cats, and can fully release their Cat loving nature.
QGood products are the soul of the company, and products cannot be separated from strong products Scientific research strength, can you introduce Purina’s scientific research matrix?
As of now, it has been 127 years since Purina was founded. It has never strayed from its core culture of being rooted in scientific research and taking animal welfare as its own responsibility. It has been deeply involved in scientific research to improve pet health for a long time. Purina has 8 R&D centers around the world, where GN products are born. Purina's scientist team has more than 500 people, including senior veterinarians, pet nutritionists, animal behavior experts, engineers and other scientific research elites. As of now, the number of scientific research patents Purina is applying for and has applied for has reached more than 7,700, and a large part of them have been transformed into GN products.
Purina people have always believed that: "Only when practitioners have the ability to empathize with pets, can they regard pet health as the purpose of development."
Time flies, in the turbulent business world In the environment, this sentence is still timeless, and Purina people practice it in every aspect.
If Purina’s nutritional science research is classified, the cutting-edge breakthroughs our scientists have made so far are mainly focused on the following aspects:
Exploring brain health: understanding How nutritional innovation can help protect brain health, improve cognitive impairment in dogs and cats caused by aging, and improve symptoms of canine idiopathic epilepsy.
Improved Heart Health: Discover how key nutrients support heart health in cats and dogs. Targeting dogs with early-stage myxomatous valve disease, Purina scientists have identified a specific group of nutrients that support canine heart function and slow the progression of the disease.
Regulating cat-derived allergens: By discovering the key cat-derived allergen Fel d1 and its secretion site, and through exquisite experimental design, the corresponding antibodies were extracted, which greatly reduced the risk of human allergies to cats. Troubled.
Improve gastrointestinal health: Study the key role of intestinal microorganisms in pet health and how nutritional intervention can improve pet health, enhance immunity, and improve common health problems.
Prolonged Healthy Life: Purina’s research has shown the critical role nutrition plays in pet health. Several of these landmark studies reveal key nutritional interventions that can slow down the problems of aging and extend the lives of dogs and cats.
Exploring nutrition at the molecular level: Purina scientists use omics expertise to analyze DNA, RNA, proteins, metabolism or gut microbial homeostasis to explore new nutritional solutions, such as for arthritis Nutritional intervention.
QAs the developer of the WSAVA body condition score chart, what efforts has Purina made and what kind of feedback has it received?
In WSAVA's global nutrition guidelines, there is a body posture scoring tool.
There is a row of very small words below the scoring chart. What is written? Can we zoom in and take a look:
This posture rating scale actually comes from an experiment conducted by Purina scientists in the 1980s. Purina spent 14 years completing a scientific research project on "diet management and lifespan" regardless of cost. This study shows that properly controlling pets’ energy intake and keeping their weight within a reasonable range can effectively delay aging. Specifically, if a dog's weight is controlled at an ideal level from an early age, its lifespan can be extended by nearly two years. I believe everyone understands that this type of research requires a huge investment of resources and time, and cannot be directly Translated into economic benefits, the reason why Purina conducts this research regardless of cost is precisely out of its mission to protect the health of pets. Facts have proved that its significance is far-reaching, because it allows pet owners to truly understand the relationship between weight and lifespan, and helps everyone realize the importance of scientific feeding. At the same time, Purina scientists created the "Purina Body Status Scoring System" through this research, which has been referenced and cited by the global pet industry. With this assessment tool, pet owners can easily evaluate their pet's body posture. You can also find this rating form on GN packaging. Here, I would also like to share with you the latest version of the 2021 Purina body score chart:
